Danio rerio
The Zebra Danio (Danio rerio) is a small, active freshwater fish characterized by its distinctive horizontal stripes. Typically silver or gold in body color, it exhibits five uniform blue to purple stripes extending from the gill cover to the base of the caudal fin. Native to the Ganges region of Eastern India and surrounding areas, this species inhabits a variety of environments, including fast-flowing streams and slow-moving ponds.
Zebra Danios are social fish and thrive in schools. They are peaceful and best kept with other non-aggressive species. In the aquarium, they prefer a well-planted environment with ample open swimming space. As omnivores, their diet should consist of a varied mix of flake food, frozen food, and small live foods. Males are typically more streamlined in shape, while females have a more rounded abdomen. Spawning occurs among fine-leaved plants, with females laying 300-400 eggs. The fry hatch within approximately two days and can be fed small live foods such as brine shrimp nauplii.
