Pterophyllum scalare
Pterophyllum scalare, commonly referred to as the Silver Angelfish, is a freshwater fish species native to the Amazon River basin of South America, specifically regions within Peru, Colombia, and Brazil. This species inhabits slow-moving waters, including swamps and flooded areas characterized by dense vegetation and variable water clarity, ranging from clear to silty. Silver Angelfish exhibit a laterally compressed body shape with elongated dorsal and anal fins, contributing to their distinctive appearance. Adults can attain a body height of up to 15 cm. They display a diverse diet in their natural habitat, consuming small fish, invertebrates such as shrimp and worms, and aquatic insects. In the aquarium, they readily accept a variety of foods, including flakes, pellets, and frozen or live foods. Optimal aquarium conditions include a water temperature of 24 to 30°C, a pH between 6.0 and 7.5, and a general hardness (GH) between 3 and 10 °dH. Silver Angelfish are generally peaceful but can exhibit territorial behavior, especially during breeding. They thrive in well-planted aquariums with ample swimming space.
