Xiphophorus maculatus
The Red Wag Platy, *Xiphophorus maculatus*, is a selectively bred color morph of the Southern Platyfish. It is characterized by a red body and black markings typically found on the fins, particularly the caudal fin (tail). Native to freshwater environments in Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras, this platy variant is a popular choice for community aquariums due to its peaceful nature and ease of care. Red Wag Platies are adaptable to a range of water conditions but thrive in planted aquariums with stable parameters. They are livebearers, with females giving birth to live young. The Red Wag Platy is an omnivorous species that readily accepts commercially prepared flake food, as well as vegetable matter and small invertebrates.
