The Red Platy, *Xiphophorus maculatus*, is a freshwater fish belonging to the Poeciliidae family. Native to North and Central America, specifically Mexico, Belize and Guatemala, this livebearing species is popular in the aquarium hobby due to its vibrant red coloration and ease of care. Red Platies typically reach a maximum size of 7 cm. They are generally peaceful and well-suited for community aquariums. Optimal water conditions include a temperature range of 18 to 25 °C, a pH between 6.8 and 8.0, and general hardness (GH) of 10-25 dGH. Platies are omnivorous, readily accepting a varied diet of flake food, algae, and small invertebrates. They thrive in well-planted aquariums with ample swimming space.
