Otocinclus vestitus
Otocinclus vestitus, commonly referred to as Otocinclus Catfish, is a small freshwater fish belonging to the Loricariidae family. Native to the fast-moving rivers and streams of South America, these fish are characterized by their slender body, typically tan or beige in color, with dark brown or black speckling. Otocinclus are generally peaceful and social creatures, thriving in groups. They are widely recognized for their algae-eating capabilities, which makes them a popular choice for planted aquariums. These catfish require a well-maintained aquarium with high filtration, moderate water flow, and ample aeration. A planted tank with driftwood and rocks provides suitable hiding places and grazing opportunities. While they primarily feed on algae and diatoms, supplemental feeding with vegetable-based foods is necessary when algae are scarce.
