Molly

Freshwater

Poecilia sphenops

The molly (Poecilia sphenops) is a livebearing fish native to fresh, brackish, and marine waters from Mexico to Colombia. Wild-type mollies typically exhibit a dull, silvery coloration. Selective breeding over centuries has resulted in a wide array of color variations and body shapes, including melanistic (black), white, golden, and speckled (Dalmatian) varieties, as well as the balloon molly, which has a genetically induced spinal deformity, and the lyretail molly, which has an altered caudal fin structure. Males are generally smaller than females. Mollies are generally peaceful but can exhibit some aggression, especially among males. They are relatively easy to care for, making them a popular choice for beginner aquarists. They thrive in well-maintained aquariums with appropriate water parameters. Mollies consume a varied omnivorous diet.
