Betta splendens
The Halfmoon Betta (Betta splendens) is a selectively bred variant of the Siamese Fighting Fish, distinguished by its large, ornate tail fin that spreads 180 degrees, resembling a half-moon. Native to Southeast Asia, specifically the Mekong River basin, these fish inhabit shallow, slow-moving or stagnant freshwater environments such as rice paddies, canals, and floodplains. Male Halfmoon Bettas are highly territorial and should be housed individually to prevent aggression. Females can be kept together in groups of three or more in a sufficiently large tank with plenty of hiding places to distribute aggression. A varied diet consisting of high-quality betta pellets, flakes, and occasional live or frozen foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp is essential for their health and vibrant coloration. They thrive in well-maintained aquariums with stable water parameters and gentle filtration. Regular water changes are crucial for maintaining optimal water quality.
