Dalmatian Molly

Freshwater

Poecilia latipinna

The Dalmatian Molly (Poecilia latipinna) is a color variant of the Sailfin Molly. This fish is characterized by a white or silver base color overlaid with black spots, resembling the coat of a Dalmatian dog. It is a peaceful fish suitable for community aquariums. Mollies are adaptable to varying salinity levels, allowing them to thrive in freshwater aquariums with added aquarium salt or even brackish water setups. They require a spacious, well-planted tank with efficient filtration to manage their relatively large waste production. Dalmatian Mollies are omnivorous, consuming both plant matter and meaty foods. Regular feeding with algae-based flakes supplemented with treats like bloodworms, brine shrimp, or tubifex worms helps to ensure their health and vibrant coloration. Sexing is relatively easy, with males exhibiting a pointed anal fin (gonopodium) and a larger dorsal fin, while females have a rounded anal fin and develop a gravid spot when pregnant. As livebearers, females give birth to live young.
