Poecilia latipinna
The Black Molly (Poecilia latipinna) is a popular freshwater fish derived from the Sailfin Molly. This variant is characterized by its solid black coloration and relatively short fins. Although juveniles may exhibit some gold or silver patches, these typically fade as the fish matures. Black Mollies are adaptable to varying salinity levels, allowing them to be kept in freshwater aquariums with added aquarium salt, or gradually acclimated to saltwater environments. They are generally peaceful fish suitable for community aquariums with other species of similar size and temperament.
Males can be distinguished from females by their pointed anal fin (gonopodium) and larger dorsal fin, while females have a rounded anal fin and develop a gravid spot when pregnant. Black Mollies are livebearers, meaning they give birth to live young. A well-planted aquarium is recommended to provide shelter for the fry. They are omnivorous and require a varied diet consisting of both plant-based and meaty foods, such as algae-based flakes, bloodworms, and brine shrimp.
