Carassius auratus
The Red Fantail Goldfish (Carassius auratus) is a selectively bred form of the common goldfish, distinguished by its double tail fin and egg-shaped body. The 'fantail' refers to the forked caudal fin, which is held upright and fans out. Red Fantails typically exhibit a vibrant red or orange coloration, sometimes with contrasting white or translucent areas in the fins. They possess a single dorsal fin and well-proportioned, rounded fins.
Native to East Asia, specifically China, Fantail Goldfish are adaptable to both aquarium and pond environments. They thrive in well-maintained tanks or ponds with adequate filtration and space to swim. They are social fish, generally peaceful, and can be kept with other goldfish varieties.
As omnivores, Red Fantails require a varied diet consisting of high-quality goldfish flakes or pellets supplemented with live or frozen foods like bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp. A diet with approximately 30% protein is recommended. These goldfish exhibit breeding behavior in appropriate conditions, with females laying up to 1,000 eggs during spawning.
