Common Goldfish

Freshwater

Carassius auratus

The Common Goldfish (Carassius auratus) is a freshwater fish belonging to the Cyprinidae family. Domesticated from wild carp in East Asia, it is now a popular aquarium and pond fish worldwide. Common Goldfish exhibit a variety of colors, including orange, red, white, black, brown, and combinations thereof. They are generally hardy and adaptable, but require ample space due to their potential adult size. While smaller goldfish may temporarily reside in smaller tanks, they require a minimum tank size of 113 liters (30 gallons) when young, and ideally much larger aquariums (378+ liters or 100+ gallons) as they can grow to exceed 30 cm (12 inches). They thrive in well-filtered environments with fine gravel substrates. Goldfish are social animals and benefit from being kept in groups. Breeding involves a courtship ritual, with females laying up to 1,000 eggs. Fry hatch within a week and should be fed appropriate small-sized food. As omnivores, Common Goldfish accept a wide range of foods, including flake, pellet, and live or frozen options. A balanced diet with limited protein is recommended.
