Paracheirodon axelrodi
The Cardinal Tetra (Paracheirodon axelrodi) is a small, colorful freshwater fish native to the Orinoco and Negro River basins of South America. It is characterized by a vibrant iridescent blue stripe extending horizontally along its body, immediately above a bright red stripe that stretches the full length from the head to the caudal fin. This distinguishes it from the closely related Neon Tetra, whose red stripe only extends partway along the body. Cardinal Tetras are peaceful schooling fish, best kept in groups of six or more to promote a sense of security and display their natural shoaling behavior. They thrive in densely planted aquariums with subdued lighting, mimicking their natural habitat of slow-moving, tannin-rich blackwater tributaries. Optimal water conditions include soft, acidic water with stable parameters. They readily accept a varied diet of small foods, including flakes, micro pellets, and small frozen or live foods.
