Ancistrus sp.
The Bushy Nose Plecostomus (Ancistrus sp.) is a freshwater fish native to the rivers and tributaries of South America. It is characterized by its flattened body, typically brown with mottled lighter patterns, although color and fin variations exist. Its most distinctive feature is the presence of numerous whisker-like appendages (odontodes) around the mouth and nose, more prominent in males, which are used for detecting food. These plecos are generally peaceful and make excellent additions to community aquariums. They thrive in planted aquariums with plenty of hiding places provided by rocks and driftwood. They primarily feed on algae and detritus, supplementing their diet with high-quality flake food, algae wafers, and plant-based foods. Breeding is relatively straightforward, often triggered by a large water change, with the male guarding the eggs until they hatch. The fry should be raised separately and fed a diet of mashed vegetables.
