Ancistrus cirrhosus
The Bristlenose Pleco (Ancistrus cirrhosus) is a freshwater fish native to South America, particularly the Amazon basin. This species is characterized by its flattened body, bony plates covering its exterior, and a ventral suckermouth adapted for feeding on algae and clinging to surfaces. Adult males develop distinctive fleshy tentacles, or bristles, on their snouts, hence the common name. The typical coloration is mottled brown, gray, or black, often with small white or yellow spots. Reaching a maximum size of approximately 15 cm, the Bristlenose Pleco is smaller than many other Loricariidae, making it a suitable choice for community aquariums. They are primarily nocturnal and thrive in well-oxygenated water with moderate flow. Their diet consists of algae, detritus, and plant matter, and they benefit from supplemental feedings of vegetable-based foods. They prefer a planted tank with hiding places, such as driftwood and caves. Bristlenose plecos are generally peaceful and are compatible with a wide range of tankmates.
