Betta splendens
Betta splendens, commonly known as the Betta or Siamese Fighting Fish, is a freshwater fish native to Southeast Asia, specifically the Mekong basin of Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Indonesia. Bettas are well-known for the brilliant coloration and elaborate finnage, especially in males, which have been selectively bred for these traits. Wild Bettas typically exhibit more subdued coloration and shorter fins. Male Bettas are highly territorial and aggressive towards one another; therefore, they are typically housed individually. Females can sometimes be kept together in groups with caution. An ideal environment for Betta splendens includes a well-filtered aquarium with stable water parameters and plenty of hiding places. They prefer a temperature range of 24-30°C, a pH between 6.0 and 8.0, and a general hardness (GH) between 5-19 dGH. A varied carnivore diet consisting of high-quality flakes, frozen or freeze-dried foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp, is recommended.
